Bill Buffett and cousin, Warren Buffett, at a signing for a book I edited, Foods You Will Enjoy: the Story of Buffett's Store.

Warren contributed a chapter of the book and helped Bill (above, wih me) plug it at his Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting in Omaha. Both Warren and Bill worked at the legendary family grocery.

Doha women writing students

teaching in Qatar

I had a fascinating six-weekresidency in Qatar, where I taught writing to a group of Qatar University students and to the QU library staff. I also taught a day-long writing workshop to a group of ex-pats, living in Qatar. For news about the programs click here and here.

And for more informal details, and pictures from my stay there, visit my blog.

Testimonials

"I have just returned from an incredible week in the South of France with Carol Henderson at the helm of a writers’ workshop. I can’t say enough about it. The accommodations, companionship, scenery, outings, adventures and food, were only outdone by the time spent with Carol discov-ering hidden voices. Writing is no longer a labor, not always inspired, but always a joy. Thank you so much Carol, it was a life changing event for me. I can’t wait to attend the next one."
--Sandra Elliot, Chapel Hill, NC

"My time spent at Carol's writing work-shop in Provence was
a life-changing event. I will always remember it with great joy as one of the best weeks of my life!
"
--Kit Stewart, entrepreneur and author, Pittsboro, NC

"In Provence, with Carol and our workshop, I found the peace and content-ment with which to explore my thoughts, as well as the encouragement and support to write and share them. It was also an enor-mously fun time."
–Liza Collins, playwright and screenwriter, Providence, RI

"Carol Henderson's workshop was exactly what I needed to jumpstart my writing... it was a productive and fun week."–Stephanie Silberstein, Writer, Fayetteville, NC

"My goal for the writing residency was to be motivated to get back to my writing of a memoir that deals with my journey from mourning to joy. You provided that motivation and inspiration for doing just that... Thank you for the integrity and vulnerability with which you facilitated our work together."
–Wilson Brent, pastor (ret.) Cary, NC

Professional Programs

Every day, we use language for the necessities–to chat with our friends, report on a meeting–or just to order a pizza. But we seldom use it for self discovery, to learn what we truly think or feel. My workshops teach insight and transformation–at home or in the workplace.

Carol Henderson - professional workshop
I teach Transformative Language

in my professional workshops, as a tool for stimulating insight, relieving stress, promoting healing, self-knowledge, and mutual understanding.

These healing workshops, which can be customized for a variety of corporate and institutiional settings, evolved out of my work with a group of mothers who, like me, had lost a child. Dealing with bereavement is often a challenge in large organizations, but the approach has wider uses.

Every day the folks staffing major regional Hospice facilities deal with the emotions and stress of caring for patients in their final stage of life. I've found reflective writing is a skill perfectly suited for professionals in the caring professions, both to teach their patients and clients, and to help care for themselves.

Here is a sampling of staff response to my four-day workshop."

“Carol Henderson's course renewed my creativity and connected me with my writing self. Her exercises, handouts, and suggestions invigorated my writing inside and outside the classroom. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to discover what they think while having fun in the process!”

–Sherryl Kleinman, Prof. of Sociology, UNC-Chapel Hill

A Case in Point ...

Hopsice workers are not necessarily grieving, personally, but their constant daily work is with those who are–and in addition are often traumatized. This level of service– in this high-stress "workplace"- can lead to depression, burnout, and (at the very least) reduced job performance. Transformative writing is a powerful tool for revitalization that all HR staff members can benefit from--both professionally and personally.

Recently I conducted Writing for Caregivers, a staff development workshop series, for counselors and medical staff at Hospice and Paliative Care Center, Winston-Salem, NC...and here is a sample of the response:

"This has been an amazing opportunity to reconnect with myself.  I had no idea how disconnected I had become.  The exercises have changed my life and instilled the curiosity and willpower for me to continue journaling after today. You have changed my life and I THANK YOU!"

–Kay Watson, Community Education Liaison, Hospice and Palliative Care Center

". . . I learned that there is a writer (fiction) inside me!  I’ve always seen myself more as a non-fiction recorder who can embellish, but this was a wonderful awakening.  Thank you!"

–Donna Hampton, Grief Counsellor

"I have learned that I love to write.  I have been reminded that I can write about  lots of things—not just myself, my life.  I have learned that I learn a great deal when I write." –Sara E. Bridges, Community Education Liaison

"Confirmation that writing is good therapy, good self care. Venting on paper, dreaming on paper-- anything on paper is not wasted energy, but a beginning step for healing and wholeness.  Writing is essential for my well-being.  Thank you, it has been a joy and a blessing!!"

–Chris Martin, Long-Term Care Liaison

"Writing is a good way to find out what you’rethinking."

–Carol Ford, Community Partnership Liaison

"Some days everything was funny.  The subject could have been Death and I would still write something that made me laugh.  Prompts, objects and paintings, all really helped to get my writing started."

–Faye Everhart, Volunteer Coordinator

"I’ve learned to express myself in writing in different ways. I’ve learned there is still much work to be done on myself but also how far I’ve come. I’ll miss this monthly event. Thanks for it all!"

–Anna Scott, Medical Liaison
