Writing Groups, Workshops
Fall - 2008
• Creative Nonfiction Writers' Group - Tuesday Session (Fully Enrolled)
In this weekly workshop, we will transform the stuff of everyday life—the morning walk with a friend, uprootings, suburban sprawl—into polished pieces of nonfiction writing. We will also mine our personal histories for material, shaping true stories from our pasts.
As we read and discuss participants’ work, we will explore elements of craft including voice, tone, detail, humor, point of view, and narrative tension. And we will always maintain an open, trusting, and constructive workshop environment.
Each week there will be handouts from current magazines, newspapers, and journals as well as writing prompts to work on at home. Bring a piece you’d like to share the first night.
10 Tuesdays, Sept 16 – Dec 2, 2008 - 7-9:30 pm
At Carol's House. Fee $250.

No class October 21 or November 25
• Writing-to-Prompts Workshop (Fully Enrolled)
This writing workshop is designed after the method developed by Pat Schneider, founder of Amherst Writers & Artists, to help us find our truest voices and to silence our inner critics.
We meet weekly at Carol’s house and begin our writing circle at 7:00 p.m. Carol offers dessert at the break, and we adjourn at 10 p.m., each of us having read twice. Writers of all levels of experience and of all genres are invited.
There are no criteria for acceptance other than a sincere desire and willingness to write and be a constructive group member. Members can bring edited pieces for critique. It’s amazing to witness each writer’s growth.
10 Wednsdays, Sept 17 - Dec 3, 2008 - 7-10pm
At Carol's house. Fee $350.

No workshop October 22 or November 26

• Journaling in Words and Images, in collaboration with visual artist Linda Passman (Postponed)
A picture may (or may not) be worth a thousand words–it's debatable. But here’s how you can merge the evocative power of both words and images in your journal to create synergy, insight, and fun.

(From journal of workshop participant, Sandra Elliott)
We'll mingle color, white space, layers, borders, backgrounds, word clusters, memories, anecdotes, lists, and stories. We’ll add pockets to the journal page, and learn how to use evocative clips, snapshots, letters, tracings, and drawings (for those who draw!) to make multi-sensory collages. Come prepared to improvise, play, and enjoy the process.
At the end of this two-day workshop, you’ll have colorful and original pages ripe with ideas for your own artistic expression and richer journaling. Taught by Carol Henderson and Linda Passman. Bring a bag lunch. We’ll supply drinks and dessert.
2 Saturdays, 9:30 am - 3 pm
At Linda Passman's studio, in Chapel Hill.
Fee: $195 (covers both days–and followup meeting later in the Fall, date to be announced). Once registered, you’ll receive your class confirmation, list of suggested supplies, and directions to Linda's studio.
Note: We will not be offering the Visual Workshop this Fall. However, watch for the Spring 2009 dates, which we'll post as soon as we have them
